JONATHAN ALLEN

7 - 29 Feb  2020

Molekyl Gallery presents LIVE FROM NEW YORK, a solo show by Jonathan Allen, with an opening reception on February 7 from 6–9pm. LIVE FROM NEW YORK features new and existing mixed media works responding to the recent history, current events and political climate in the United States of America. Included in the show will be an installation featuring the articles of impeachment against Donald J. Trump, and works on denim and canvas – created using chance, experiment, and chaotic physical processes to evoke turbulence and movement – and a video of the complete collection of Interruptions, a series of New York City subway ad interventions that began in Summer 2017.

Interruptions 118, 129, 36

Jonathan Allen’s visual arts practice is regularly informed by collaboration, performance, and site-specificity. Allen’s experience collaborating with choreographer Joanna Kotze has had a direct influence on his creative practice. In 2017 Allen and Kotze worked and performed in residence at Milvus Artistic Research Center (MARC) in Kivik, and in 2020 return to Sweden to work in residence for 3 weeks at the International Dance Programme Malmö. Allen will continue to Knislinge, for a 1 week residency at MARC.

Jonathan Allen works in painting, collage, video, and performance. He holds a B.A. in Visual Arts / Art History from Columbia University, and in New York has exhibited at BRIC, Lu Magnus, PS122, Exit Art, Socrates Sculpture Park, Artists Space, Bravin Lee, FiveMyles, and Caren Golden, among others. He has participated in Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC)’s Workspace, Process Space, and Swing Space residency programs, the Bronx Museum of Art’s Artist in the Marketplace program, and has been awarded residencies at the Bogliasco Foundation in Italy, Cill Rialaig in Ireland, Milvus Artistic Research Center in Sweden, and Blue Mountain Center. He is a recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner, Chenven, Puffin, George Sugarman Foundations and Brooklyn Arts Council.
Allen frequently collaborates with poets and performers, and is currently working on ABOUT A MINUTE, a series of short videos with New York poets, FOUNDERS, a series of pop-up performances at NYC contemporary art museums, and INTERRUPTIONS, a series of ad interventions in New York City subway stations, which seeks to interrupt the language of advertising with political and cultural imagery. INTERRUPTIONS is viewable on instagram @jonathanallenstudio.
